The story so far: Kestrels on our balcony<\/strong> have been nesting regularly since 2007. The male of the kestrel pair has been living with us since November 2019. With the previous female (she lived with us from July 2018 to January 2022), they brought out 6 young in 2020 and 4 young in 2021. With the current Mrs Kestrel, who\u00a0 appeared here on February 12, 2022, then 4 young ones in 2022, 6 ones in 2023 and 2024, in 2025 even 7 ones.<\/p>\n

They both spent this winter 2025\u201426 with us. Courtship began in February. 1st egg laid on April 5th (9:15\u20149:17), second on April 7th (9:57), third on April 9th (11:18), fourth on April 11th (14:34), fifth on April 13th (18:08), sixth on the night of April 15-16, seventh on April 18th (before 6:10). „Our“ female kestrel has been sitting on her eggs permanently since the evening of April 15th. Six kestrel chicks hatched. Three hatched on May 11th, the fourth and fifth on May 12th, the sixth on May 13th. On May 27, the kestrel chicks were ringed.\u00a0The first one flew out into the street on June 13, the last one on June 16. All six of them then returned home. The last time the young kestrels appeared on the balcony was on July 9.<\/p>\n

Currently<\/strong> the kestrel balcony is empty for most of the day and sometimes even at night. Only the parent pair, mainly the male, visits it.<\/p>\n

The chicks are 106 dn\u016f<\/span> \u2013 104 dn\u016f<\/span> old.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the kestrels are not present, y<\/span>ou can see also other birds: tits, nuthatches (regular winter visitors in small mixed troops), sparrows…\u00a0 and also pigeons, whose presence is a permanent source of conflicts with kestrels.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Swifts<\/strong> as the closest neighbors of \u201cour\u201d kestrels use since 2017 the\u00a0 nestboxes attached high on the wall above our windows next to the kestrel’s balcony<\/span><\/span>. Their nestboxes \u00a0had been empty since the end of July 2025 as well as the swift box on the windowsill next to the kestrel’s<\/span><\/span> balcony, that was occupied by tits last year.
\nThe swifts are already back in our street. They returned on May 1st. We recorded their activity in the swift nestboxes on May 13th.<\/p>\n

Kestrels on our kitchen window<\/strong> on the opposite side of our apartment are the second kestrel pair to nest here in 2026. The female laid the first egg on the evening of May 15th, the second on May 18th before dawn, the third on May 20th, the fourth May 22nd around noon. The eggs were supposed to hatch around May 16th, but they didn’t. However, the kestrels are still caring for them and trying to hatch them. Currently, there are only three eggs; the female consumed one on July 10th.\u00a0From July 25 to 28, only the male sat on the eggs.<\/p>\n

Incubation should have lasted approximately 28 days; the kestrels left the eggs after 70 days.<\/p>\n
